Neurodivergent

Written by:

How often do you hear about the neurodivergent parent, parenting their neurodivergent children/child? I’ve spent so much of my time trying to figure out what I’m doing. Waiting for a prompt to get my emotions rolling so I can possibly explain what I’m searching for. It feels really weird to search for something that you can only feel.

I am the mother of an adult neuro-divergent child. This is my experience, so I’m not advising you, just wanting to encourage you.
I learned that the labels the “experts” slap on our children’s foreheads really hurt, separate, ostracize, and leave long-lasting marks. I raised a child using the labels, seeking the experts, being tormented by the school system, and other horrors. In the (very) long run, I learned that LOVE is what covers, heals, inspires, encourages, and gets us through difficult times. I stopped trying to put my child in the prescribed box, stopped trying to force that child to fit in when s/he was obviously designed differently – for a purpose – and finally started trying to help him/her discover their God-given part in this life using their God-given gifts and talents. Covering with Love and taking off the pressure to perform like all the others really helped heal a schism that had formed because I thought I had to listen to the “experts.” It takes humility to say to your adult child, “I was wrong.” But it was like a healing balm spread across wounds I unwittingly inflicted.
God bless you. I hope some small part of that helps.
