For people with disabilities
If you had the power to change one law, what would it be and why?
“The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) provides for the employment of certain individuals at wage rates below the statutory minimum. “
“Also included are individuals whose earning or productive capacities are impaired by a physical or mental disability, including those related to age or injury, for the work to be performed. Employment at less than the minimum wage is authorized to prevent curtailment of opportunities for employment. Such employment is permitted only under certificates issued by the Wage and Hour Division.”
“Initiated under section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, the program was initially meant to provide jobs for injured military veterans.”
“As things currently stand, many disabled people work in what are called sheltered workshops run by certified employers that pay as little as 25 cents an hour. “
“As of November 1, more than 37,000 workers in 37 states were paid subminimum wages by 710 certificate holders, according to government data. Another 35 employers had their certificate renewals pending.”
